Allenby Bridge

The Allenby Bridge — officially also called the King Hussein Bridge — spans the Jordan River and serves as the sole crossing point between the West Bank and the Kingdom of Jordan. Named after British General Edmund Allenby, who ended Ottoman rule over Palestine in 1917, the current structure dates to 2008, replacing earlier bridges destroyed and rebuilt across decades of regional conflict. The crossing operates under strict Israeli and Jordanian regulations: travelers require prior authorization, and operating hours are limited. For Palestinians, it is frequently the only route connecting them to the wider world, giving the bridge a humanitarian and geopolitical weight that far exceeds its modest physical form.
