Old Market Square in Poznań

Poznań's Old Market Square was laid out in 1253 at the city's founding as a trading hub and at roughly two hectares ranks as Poland's third-largest market square and one of the largest on the continent. It served as the economic and political heart of the city for nearly seven centuries, until fighting in January–February 1945 reduced almost the entire square to rubble. What stands today is one of Poland's most celebrated postwar reconstruction efforts: the vivid, color-washed merchant townhouses with their Renaissance facades and arcaded ground floors were meticulously rebuilt from historical records and photographs. At the center stands the Renaissance town hall, famous for its mechanical goat clock — every day at noon two iron billygoats emerge from the gable and butt heads twelve times, drawing crowds of locals and visitors alike. Today the square hums with sidewalk cafés, restaurant terraces, and evening bar life, making it the undisputed social core of the city.
