Bazylika Archikatedralna Świętych Apostołów Piotra i Pawła

The Poznań Cathedral, formally the Archcathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, stands on Ostrów Tumski — a river island in the Warta — and is one of the oldest churches in Poland. Local tradition holds that this is the site where Piast Duke Mieszko I was baptised in 966, the event conventionally marking the Christianisation of Poland. Beneath the Gothic nave, excavated crypts contain the burial remains of early Piast rulers, confirmed by 20th-century archaeological investigation. The cathedral has survived fires, wars, and repeated reconstruction over a millennium, each era leaving visible traces in its fabric. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Poznań and a protected national monument, it remains an active pilgrimage destination reached via a short walk across the bridge to the island — the oldest settled quarter of the city.
