Castrum Apulum

Apulum was one of the most significant Roman settlements in present-day Romania — a legionary fortress combined with two distinct civilian communities, the Colonia Aurelia Apulensis and the Municipium Septimium Apulense, forming an unusually dense urban agglomeration for the province. Serving as the administrative heart of Dacia Apulensis, a province named after the city itself, it was permanently garrisoned by the Legio XIII Gemina, which transformed the site from a frontier camp into a thriving provincial capital. The remains lie beneath and alongside the baroque city fabric of modern Alba Iulia; excavations have uncovered foundations, inscriptions, and everyday objects that trace the settlement's rise over roughly two centuries of Roman rule in Dacia.
