Arboretum

The Arboretum of Trsteno sits on the Adriatic coast about 18 kilometres northwest of Dubrovnik and holds the distinction of being the only arboretum along the entire eastern Adriatic shoreline. Its roots trace back to the 15th century, when Ragusan nobility laid out a Renaissance garden on their estate — making it one of the oldest continuously maintained plant collections in Croatia. Two enormous plane trees from that era, over 500 years old with trunks several metres in circumference, still frame the entrance. The garden survived an earthquake in 1667 and a fire during the 1991 war, each time rebuilt from its historic plans. Today the site, protected on Croatia's Register of Cultural Property, offers terraced garden walks, panoramic views across the Adriatic, and a broad collection of exotic trees offering rare shade on the Dalmatian coast. Open daily from 7 am between May and October.
