Arturo Prat

This public artwork in Valdivia commemorates Arturo Prat Chacón (1848–1879), a Chilean naval captain regarded as one of the country's foremost national heroes. A practicing lawyer by profession, Prat also served in the Chilean Navy and took part in the War against Spain at the naval battles of Papudo (1865) and Abtao (1866). His legendary status stems from the War of the Pacific: on 21 May 1879, during the Battle of Iquique, he boarded the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar alone and was killed — an act of sacrifice that became a defining symbol of duty in Chilean national memory. Specific details about the monument's form or exact location in Valdivia are not available.
