Aso Rock

Aso Rock is a massive granite monolith rising 400 metres above the surrounding landscape northeast of central Abuja, sitting at 936 metres above sea level. When Nigeria's federal capital was deliberately planned and built in the 1980s, the rock became the literal anchor of the city's layout — government buildings, including the Presidential Complex, were positioned in direct relation to it, making the monolith inseparable from Nigerian state identity. Geologically it is one of the most prominent inselberg granites in West Africa, its hard resistant core left standing as softer surrounding rock eroded over millions of years. The summit offers broad views across the capital region.
