Puig Campana is a 1,408-metre limestone massif in Alicante province, forming the dramatic highland backdrop directly above Benidorm's coastline. The summit ridge is notched by a distinctive cleft that local legend attributes to Roland — the legendary giant supposedly struck the mountain with his sword, and the severed chunk tumbled into the sea to become the Isla de Benidorm. The standard ascent from the village of Finestrat takes four to five hours, finishing with exposed scrambling on the upper limestone terrain that demands sure footing and some route-finding experience. At the top, the panorama takes in the entire Marina Baixa coastline, the open Mediterranean, and on clear winter days the outline of Ibiza — a striking contrast to the resort towers standing 1,200 metres below.
