The figurative bronze group "The Emigrants" stands on Willy-Brandt-Platz at the Seebäderkaje in Bremerhaven's Neuer Hafen — the precise stretch of quayside from which around 7.2 million people departed Europe between 1830 and 1974, bound for new lives across the Atlantic. Budapest-born American sculptor Frank Varga designed the life-sized figures, which were unveiled on 5 July 1986. They depict a group of travellers of varied backgrounds, bags in hand, facing the water — a quiet sculpture of farewell frozen in bronze. The nearby Deutsches Auswandererhaus (German Emigration Center) documents the personal stories behind those crossings. The monument is fully wheelchair-accessible and offers an open view across the harbour from the quay.
