Bangladesh National Monument

The Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho — National Martyrs' Monument — stands in Savar, some 35 kilometers northwest of Dhaka, as Bangladesh's primary memorial to the soldiers and civilians who died during the 1971 Liberation War against Pakistan. Conceived in 1978 by architect Syed Mainul Hossain and inaugurated in 1982, the structure consists of seven tapering concrete triangles arranged in ascending order, each representing a distinct phase of the independence movement from the 1952 Language Movement to the December 1971 victory. The bold, forward-leaning geometry of the monument makes it one of the most distinctive examples of postcolonial memorial architecture in South Asia. On Independence Day (26 March) and Victory Day (16 December) the surrounding parkland draws enormous crowds; on ordinary days it offers a calm, reflective space and an accessible introduction to Bangladesh's modern founding history.
