Nuestra Señora del Carmen

The Basílica Nuestra Señora del Carmen is a Roman Catholic church in Montevideo, completed in 1891 in a classicist architectural style. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a Marian devotion rooted in the medieval Carmelite order, which traces its origins to Mount Carmel in present-day Israel. Its restrained classicist facade stands apart from the more ornate baroque churches found elsewhere in the city, reflecting the sober ecclesiastical taste of late 19th-century Uruguay. The parish remains active today.
