Church of Saint Peter a Grado

The Basilica of San Piero a Grado stands about 8 kilometres southwest of Pisa's city centre, on the very site where the Arno once emptied into a coastal lagoon before the delta silted up. According to tradition, the Apostle Peter stepped ashore here on his way to Rome — making the site one of the earliest Christian landmarks in Italy and an important stop on the medieval pilgrimage route to Rome, for which it earned the title Basilica Minor. The current structure, built largely in the 10th and 11th centuries from local tufa stone, is a fine example of Pisan Romanesque: blind arcading, a triple-aisled nave, and an unusual absence of a western façade. Inside, a late-medieval fresco cycle narrates scenes from Peter's life along the nave walls, an artistic programme rarely encountered in such a rural setting. The basilica's quiet, somewhat isolated location — far from tourist crowds — gives it a contemplative atmosphere that larger pilgrimage churches rarely preserve.
