Capela de São Frutuoso

The Chapel of São Frutuoso de Montélios, on the outskirts of Braga, is one of the oldest intact Christian structures on the Iberian Peninsula — a Visigothic oratory from the 7th century, most likely built as a mausoleum for Saint Frutuoso, Archbishop of Braga. Its Greek-cross floor plan crowned by a central tower is strikingly rare for early medieval Western Europe, and much of the original carved stonework survives in place. In the 18th century a Baroque Franciscan church was grafted directly onto the ancient chapel, meaning visitors pass through the later nave before stepping abruptly into the pre-Romanesque interior — a jarring, centuries-spanning threshold few buildings in Europe can match. Classified as a Portuguese national monument since 1944, the chapel is free to enter but keeps deliberately limited hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 14:00–16:30 only.
