Basilica of Saint-Ferjeux

The Basilica of Saint-Ferjeux, completed in 1901, occupies a hillside district of Besançon and blends Romanesque revival and neo-Byzantine elements into an eclectic ensemble rare in the French ecclesiastical landscape. The church is dedicated to the early Christian martyrs Ferreolus and Ferrutius, traditionally said to have been executed in the 3rd century in a cave on this very site — the crypt below the nave still marks that place of veneration. Holding the rank of Basilica minor within the Archdiocese of Besançon, it draws pilgrims alongside ordinary visitors. The Byzantine-inspired dome and round-arched arcades are the most striking architectural features inside. The building is listed as a protected historic monument.
