Begijnhof Ten Wijngaerde

The Begijnhof Ten Wijngaerde sits along the Minnewater lake in the heart of Bruges's old city, one of 26 surviving Flemish beguinages collectively inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beguines were laywomen who chose a life of religious devotion and communal living without taking formal monastic vows — a movement that emerged in the Low Countries around the 13th century and offered women rare economic and spiritual autonomy. Founded in 1245, this beguinage is today home to a community of Benedictine nuns who still inhabit the whitewashed gabled houses arranged around a tranquil courtyard garden. Stepping through the low arched gate, visitors enter a conspicuously quiet enclave of trimmed grass and old trees, a striking contrast to the busy streets of central Bruges just outside. Open daily 06:30–18:30; silent and respectful visits are expected.
