Belur Math

Belur Math is the global headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, the religious reform movement founded in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda and rooted in the teachings of the mystic saint Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Established on the western bank of the Hooghly River in 1899, the monastery's main temple is architecturally remarkable for deliberately fusing Hindu, Islamic, and Gothic Christian elements — a built manifesto for the universality of all religions. Vivekananda spent his final years within these grounds and was cremated here in 1902, making the site a deeply personal pilgrimage destination for his followers. Today the well-maintained riverside campus draws pilgrims, scholars, and curious visitors alike, offering a rare pocket of contemplative calm on the outskirts of Kolkata. The riverfront walkways at dusk, with the Hooghly catching the last light, are among the more quietly atmospheric experiences the city offers.
