Auwal Mosque

The Auwal Mosque in Cape Town's Bo-Kaap district is the oldest mosque in South Africa, established in 1794 under Dutch colonial rule at the Cape of Good Hope — before the British administration formally granted religious freedom to the enslaved and exiled Cape Malay community. Its founding was an act of quiet defiance by a community of largely enslaved Muslims who had been transported from Southeast Asia and who built an Islamic tradition against colonial suppression. The modest Cape Dutch-vernacular building sits among the cobblestone lanes of the Bo-Kaap, a neighborhood still shaped by Cape Malay culture. Today it functions as an active Sunni place of worship rather than a heritage exhibit, making it a living center of one of the oldest Islamic communities in the southern hemisphere.
