Bilstein

Bilstein is a 665.5-metre summit in the Vogelsberg highlands east of Schotten, its crest punctuated by exposed basalt outcrops — volcanic rock formed during the massive Vogelsberg eruption that shaped this region millions of years ago, making it one of the largest basalt plateaus in Central Europe. The otherwise densely forested hillside yields to open rock at the top, offering an unobstructed view across the rolling Hessian uplands. The hike up follows forest trails through beech woodland, arriving at a quiet, undeveloped summit with no facilities — a straightforward half-day outing with a clear geological reward at the top.
