Binghöhle

The Binghöhle near Streitberg, in the municipality of Wiesenttal in Upper Franconia, is a natural karst cave cut into the Franconian Dolomite (Malm Beta limestone) and the only show cave in the Franconian region to run through distinctly layered limestone strata. It formed as a river cave carved by a former tributary of the Wiesent when the river flowed at a much higher level; today the cave is completely dry, and the old water channels survive as smoothed passages in the rock walls. Designated a protected archaeological monument (Bodendenkmal) in Bavaria, it descends up to 60 metres below the surface and is open to visitors via guided tours. The cave sits within the Fränkische Schweiz nature region, making it a natural pairing with the area's hiking trails and dolomite rock formations above ground.
