Teufelshöhle

The Teufelshöhle near Pottenstein is a natural karst cave in the Bayreuth district of Bavaria and one of Franconia's most visited show caves. Protected as a Bavarian Bodendenkmal (ground-level heritage site), it contains striking stalactite and stalagmite formations alongside prehistoric finds suggesting early human use of the cave system. Its name — Devil's Cave — echoes old folk legends that cast the labyrinthine underground passages as a diabolical realm. Guided tours lead visitors through the main chambers at a constant temperature of around 7 °C year-round, so a jacket is advisable even in summer. The cave sits in the heart of the Fränkische Schweiz, a landscape of dolomite rock faces and forested valleys well-suited to hiking before or after a visit.
