Boll Weevil Monument

The Boll Weevil Monument in downtown Enterprise, Alabama, is the only known monument in the world erected in honor of an agricultural pest. Built in 1919, it commemorates the boll weevil, an insect that devastated the region's cotton crops in the early 20th century. Counterintuitively, locals came to view the beetle as a benefactor: the destruction of the cotton monoculture forced farmers to diversify into peanuts and other crops, ultimately driving broader economic prosperity for the area. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973, the statue stands as a singular American monument to resilience — a town that thanked the very thing that ruined it.
