Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle is one of England's best-preserved medieval fortified manors, rising above Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales since 1379. Built by Richard le Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton, it was designed as much as an aristocratic residence as a military stronghold — its four corner towers and enclosed courtyard still convey the scale of 14th-century noble ambition. The castle's most dramatic chapter came in 1568–1569, when Mary Queen of Scots was held here under guard for six months following her flight from Scotland, before being transferred further south into English custody. Visitors today can walk through largely intact medieval rooms, look out over the green dale from the battlements, and access footpaths directly into the surrounding Yorkshire Dales landscape.
