Avigliana Castle

The ruined castle of Avigliana is considered one of Piedmont's oldest fortifications, with origins traditionally traced to the 10th century. Perched on a hill at the mouth of the Susa Valley, some 25 kilometres west of Turin, it once commanded the key Alpine route into France — a corridor long coveted by the House of Savoy. Today the site is a protected Italian national monument, though little remains beyond scattered walls and foundations. The climb to the hilltop rewards visitors with broad views over the Susa Valley and Avigliana's glacial lakes, and the atmospheric decay of the ruins gives the place a quietly haunting character.
