Breitkopf & Härtel

On this site in central Leipzig, Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf founded in 1719 what is now recognized as the world's oldest surviving music publisher. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Breitkopf & Härtel shaped the European sheet-music trade like no other firm: it issued first editions of works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms, and produced the landmark complete editions of Bach that defined how later generations understood the composer. Leipzig was then the undisputed capital of German-language publishing, and Breitkopf was its musical core. The firm's main offices have long since moved to Wiesbaden, and the Leipzig location today is marked as a historical memorial.
