Broadway

Also known as: Broadway Street, Great White Way, Heeren Straat · +3

Broadway is Manhattan's oldest and, at 25 kilometres, longest street and the only diagonal axis cutting across the Randel Plan grid of 1811. It roughly follows the Wickquasgeck Trail, an old Lenape path that ran the length of the island. The Theater District at Times Square with its 41 stages is now synonymous with the Broadway musical; the oldest continuously operating house, the Lyceum on 45th Street, opened in 1903. South of there Broadway becomes an office and retail spine, running through SoHo and TriBeCa down to Bowling Green at the southern tip. To the north it grinds on through Harlem, Washington Heights and across the Broadway Bridge into the Bronx.
