Fountains in Leipzig

The Brunnen in Leipzig are not a single monument but an ensemble of 19 historic fountains that mark the squares of the inner city. They range from the Mendebrunnen on Augustusplatz, a neo-Baroque sculptural group designed by Adolph Gnauth in 1886, to modern pump installations from the post-reunification years. Originally the fountains supplied drinking water to the population; today the municipal cleaning service maintains them as decorative and historical features. Walkers encounter them at Naschmarkt, the Markt, in front of the New Town Hall and across the centre, often surrounded by cafes and summer street music.
