BT Tower

The BT Tower on Cleveland Street in Fitzrovia is a 177-metre post-war modernist telecommunications tower completed in 1964 and the tallest building in London on its opening. Designed by Eric Bedford for the General Post Office as the central node of the British microwave network, it was first called the Post Office Tower; with privatisation in 1984 it became the London Telecom Tower and in 1992 the BT Tower. A revolving restaurant near the top was damaged by an Angry Brigade bomb in 1971 and closed to the public for good in 1980. For security reasons the tower did not appear on official Ordnance Survey maps until 1993. In 2024 BT sold the tower to the MCR hotel group; conversion into a hotel with a public viewing deck is planned.
