Certosa di Garegnano

Former Carthusian monastery from 1349, featuring impressive 16th-century frescoes — a quiet medieval retreat in northwestern Milan.

The Certosa di Garegnano, also known as the Charterhouse of Milan, is a former Carthusian monastery in the northwestern suburb of Garegnano. Founded in 1349 under Archbishop Giovanni Visconti, it ranks among the most significant medieval religious complexes in Lombardy. The monastery church is decorated with expansive fresco cycles from the 16th and 17th centuries, including works by Daniele Crespi depicting scenes from the life of Bruno of Cologne, founder of the Carthusian order. Today the complex is home to a Capuchin community. Protected as an Italian National Monument, it offers a contemplative contrast to the busy city just outside its walls.
