Museum of the Imperial Collections
Tokyo
The Cup Noodles Museum in Yokohama is dedicated to Momofuku Ando, the Taiwan-born founder of Nissin Foods, who invented instant noodles in a backyard shed in 1958 and Cup Noodles in 1971. Opened in 2011, the museum tells his story in a recreation of the shed where he spent more than a year frying noodles until he perfected the flash-frying process. The centrepiece is the My Cup Noodles Factory, where visitors design their own cup, fill it with noodles, broth and four toppings of their choice from twelve options, and seal it on a miniature production line. Upstairs an enormous play structure lets children climb through a stylised noodle-making process. The Noodles Bazaar serves noodle dishes from around the world at minimal prices.
