Daidarabotchi Statue

The statue depicts Daidarabotchi, a colossal giant from Japanese folklore credited with creating mountains, lakes and ponds wherever he sat down while walking. Across many prefectures, unusual depressions and hills in the landscape are traditionally explained as his footprints. The sculpture brings this oral-tradition yokai into physical form. Visitors find a quiet folklore monument off the standard sightseeing routes, appreciated more by locals than international tourists.
