Delhi

Delhi is a metropolis in northern India that as a Union Territory reports directly to the central government and, together with New Delhi, contains the country's capital. The city looks back on more than 2,500 years of settlement history and has served in turn as Sultanate, Mughal and British colonial capital. Seven historic cities overlap here in close quarters, from Mehrauli with the Qutb Minar via Shah Jahan's walled Shahjahanabad to Edwin Lutyens' grand government district around the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb and the Qutb complex are all UNESCO World Heritage sites. Today visitors experience the striking contrast between the narrow alleys of Chandni Chowk with their street kitchens, the wide boulevards of the British city and the fast-growing high-rise suburbs of Gurgaon and Noida. Street food, Sufi shrines, bazaars and Mughal architecture make Delhi one of South Asia's most dense cultural experiences.
