German Tower

The 29-metre brick clock tower, in Spanish Torre del Reloj, stands in the historic centre of Lima in front of La Casona, the cultural centre of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. The German nickname refers to the clockwork: the mechanism made in Germany was a gift from Lima's German community to mark the centenary of Peruvian independence in 1921. The tower stands at the corner of Avenida Abancay and Avenida Nicolas de Pierola within the UNESCO World Heritage centre of Lima. The clock no longer keeps regular time, yet the tower remains a marker of San Marcos University.
