Also known as: Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, Basilica and Convent of Nuestra Señora de la Merced, Lima
The Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Merced is one of Lima's oldest churches — founded by the Mercedarians in 1535 and completed in its Baroque form by 1735. Dedicated to the Virgin of Mercy, patroness of the Peruvian Armed Forces, it stands in Lima's UNESCO-listed historic centre. Its Churrigueresque Baroque portal is considered one of the finest examples of this ornate style in South America, and the church remains an active centre of Mercedarian religious life.
