Eisei Bunko Museum

The Eisei Bunko on the Mejiro heights in Tokyo holds the art collection of the Hosokawa clan from Kumamoto, one of the most powerful daimyo families of the Edo period. Hosokawa Moritatsu transferred the holdings to a foundation in 1950, and the dedicated exhibition building opened to the public in 1972. On view are swords, lacquerware, tea ceramics, Noh masks, hanging scrolls and Chinese imports - many designated national cultural properties, mapping how a warrior family understood itself across generations. The museum remains one of Tokyo's quieter institutions, with rotating special shows every few months; the adjoining Higo-Hosokawa Garden on the former clan estate makes a natural extension of the visit.
