Eiskeller Altenberge

The Eiskeller Altenberge is a well-preserved underground cellar complex belonging to the former Gebrüder Beuing brewery in the small Münsterland town of Altenberge, today listed as a protected historic monument. Before mechanical refrigeration, breweries harvested natural ice in winter and stored it in deep brick-vaulted chambers to regulate fermentation — a technique whose multi-story infrastructure survives here in unusually complete form. Guided tours, offered for just €2 per person, walk visitors through the ice-harvesting process and the barrel-maturation chambers spread across several underground levels. The site is wheelchair accessible, offers dedicated children's tours, and makes for a genuinely surprising encounter with pre-industrial brewing craft off the typical tourist trail.
