Ferdinandstein

The Ferdinandstein is a sandstone rock outcrop in Saxony's Elbe Sandstone Mountains that provides the highest vantage point over the Bastei Bridge and the Elbe valley below. The Bastei area drew Romantic-era painters as early as the 1820s — Caspar David Friedrich famously used these jagged formations as inspiration — and the overlook has carried a named identity ever since. The viewing platform is compact, so early mornings or overcast days keep crowds manageable and reward visitors with mist-wrapped forest views that carry a genuinely eerie atmosphere. The approach from the nearby Bastei hotel takes only a few minutes on an easy path, making it one of the most accessible panoramic spots in the region.
