Victorian fort near Rochester active 1892–1970, later site of the secret Chatham Y Station used by British signals intelligence in World War II.
Fort Bridgewoods was a British military site in operation from 1892 to around 1970, located southwest of Rochester and Chatham in the Borough of Medway. It was built as part of a Victorian ring of fortifications protecting Chatham Dockyard, one of Britain's most important naval yards since the 16th century. During the Second World War the fort took on a covert function: it housed the Chatham Y Station, a signals interception post run by British intelligence to monitor enemy radio traffic. This role remained secret for many years. The site sits well off the usual tourist routes and is no longer publicly accessible – a quiet relic of two distinct eras of British military history.
