Fort Scott National Historic Site

Fort Scott National Historic Site in southeastern Kansas preserves one of the most intact frontier military posts from the mid-19th century United States. Established in 1842 to patrol the Osage-Choctaw border, the fort became a critical Union Army supply depot during the Civil War and served as a recruiting ground for some of the first African American regiments in the Union forces. More than twenty authentically restored structures — barracks, a hospital, officers' quarters, and stables — are open as an outdoor museum. Ranger-led programs and living-history demonstrations bring the daily routines of 1840s–1860s frontier life into vivid relief.
