This monument commemorates Bachir Gemayel, a Maronite Christian politician and commander of the Forces Libanaises during the Lebanese Civil War. In August 1982 he was elected President of Lebanon, a result that briefly raised hopes of a negotiated end to years of sectarian conflict. He was assassinated on 14 September 1982 in the Ashrafieh district of Beirut by a bomb blast, killed before he could be inaugurated. The memorial sits within the predominantly Christian eastern side of the city and reflects Lebanon's deeply fractured memory culture — Gemayel remains a revered national figure to his supporters and a deeply controversial wartime leader to others.
