Galerist

Founded in 2001, Galerist is one of Turkey's most respected contemporary art galleries, credited with establishing international careers for a generation of Turkish artists. Since 2011 the gallery has occupied Passage Petits-Champs in the Pera district — an 18th-century Ottoman arcade building that was restored rather than erased: exhibition rooms retain fragments of elaborate painted walls that create an unexpected dialogue with the contemporary works on display. Shows are tightly curated, rotating regularly, and admission is free. The combination of preserved historical fabric and rigorous contemporary programming gives Galerist a character distinctly rooted in Istanbul — neither a white cube nor a heritage museum, but something in between.
