Hakaniemi Market Hall

Hakaniemen Kauppahalli is the second-largest market hall in Helsinki, a two-storey red-brick building on Hakaniemi Square in the working-class and now hip district of Kallio. Designed by city architect Karl Hard af Segerstad and opened in 1914, it shows a Nordic version of Art Nouveau with red brick facades and an ornamented entrance. The ground floor is lined with stalls of Finnish specialities: cold-smoked salmon, Karelian pasties, reindeer, wood-fired rye bread, Ostrobothnian cheeses and foraged herbs. The upper floor mixes cafes, street food and craft. The hall was closed from 2018 to 2023 for a careful restoration and has reopened in its original form.
