Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath is a 320-hectare semi-wild park in north London that has been common land since medieval times and was never landscaped. Unlike royal parks, it has no geometric paths or manicured lawns, just genuine heathland, ancient oak woods and untamed ponds. In the 19th century residents fought a lord who wanted to build on the land and secured it for the public by act of parliament in 1871. Three bathing ponds operate year-round, segregated into men's, women's and mixed, with memberships passed down through families. From Parliament Hill the view stretches across the City to the Shard, a sightline legally protected from development. Visitors share the heath with cold-water swimmers carrying towels, dog walkers and kite flyers rather than tour groups.
