Hermann Heights Monument

The Hermann Heights Monument crowns a hill above New Ulm, Minnesota, a city founded by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. Dedicated in 1897, it bears a nearly ten-meter bronze statue of the Cherusci chieftain Hermann (Arminius), who famously destroyed three Roman legions in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. The monument was deliberately conceived as a transatlantic counterpart to the Hermannsdenkmal completed in Detmold, Germany in 1875 — a statement of cultural continuity by the German diaspora. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it offers sweeping views of the Minnesota River Valley from the base platform. New Ulm's strong German-American identity, still visible in its street names and annual Oktoberfest, gives the monument a living cultural context beyond mere commemoration.
