Sumida Hokusai Museum

A 2016 museum in Tokyo's Sumida ward dedicated to the woodblock master Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), built in the district where he was born. The shimmering aluminium volume sliced by sharp angular cuts is the work of Pritzker laureate Sejima Kazuyo (SANAA) and folds itself between surrounding social housing. Inside, digital reproductions, original prints and a walk-in reconstruction of Hokusai's studio trace his output from The Great Wave off Kanagawa to the 36 Views of Mount Fuji. An audioguide explains the permanent collection; rotating shows dig into single phases. Despite international fame the museum stays pleasantly small - one hour to walk through, two to enjoy properly.
