Jena Bridge

The Pont d'Iena has spanned the Seine between the Champ de Mars and the Trocadero since 1814, linking two of the most monumental axes in Paris. Napoleon ordered its construction in 1807 to commemorate the French victory at Jena in 1806; after his fall in 1815 the Prussian occupation troops wanted to blow it up, but Louis XVIII saved it through a symbolic change of name. Since 1853 the five stone arches have carried four monumental equestrian groups on the corner piers. The bridge was widened in 1889 for the opening of the Eiffel Tower and reinforced again in 1937 for the World's Fair. Today thousands of visitors cross here daily between the Eiffel Tower and the best viewing terrace in the city.
