Palais de Chaillot
Art DecoWorld ExhibitionListed Building
The Jardins du Trocadero were laid out in 1937 for the Paris World's Fair on the slope of Chaillot, replacing earlier grounds from 1878. The symmetrical axis descends in terraces from the new Palais de Chaillot to the Pont d'Iena, framing a direct view of the Eiffel Tower across the river. At its centre the Fontaine de Varsovie sends a 50-metre jet of water over the basins from twenty water cannons on hot days. Bronze statues from the 1930s line the staircases between magnolias and limes. The upper terrace between the wings of the palais is the most popular photo spot for the Eiffel Tower; in the evening it fills with skaters, street musicians and tour groups.
