Statue of John Henry Newman

The Cardinal Newman Memorial in Kensington commemorates John Henry Newman, the Anglican theologian who converted to Catholicism in 1845 and later became a cardinal. The bronze statue was unveiled in 1895; the sculptor was L. J. Chavalliaud. It stands on Brompton Road in front of the convent building of the London Oratorians, the congregation Newman himself founded in England in 1849 on the model of Philip Neri. Newman is shown life-size in habit and biretta in a gesture of blessing. The memorial is a Grade II listed structure. Immediately next door is the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Brompton Oratory, one of the most important Catholic churches in London. Newman was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2019, deepening the site's significance as a place of pilgrimage.
