Cathedral of Saint George (Damascus)
Damascus
Cathedral of the Syriac Catholic Church in Damascus's ancient Christian quarter.
The Syriac Catholic Cathedral of Saint Paul in Damascus is the seat of the Syriac Catholic Archeparchy of Damascus. It stands in the Christian quarter of the old city, about 100 metres west of the historic east gate Bab Sharqi, on the ancient street called Straight. The building combines Eastern church architecture with a long Christian continuity in one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. The Syriac Catholic community maintains its own liturgical rite derived from the Syriac Orthodox tradition. As a cathedral, the church is the spiritual and institutional heart of this community in Syria.
