Pyhän Henrikin katedraali

St Henry's Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Helsinki and stands in the Kaartinkaupunki district on Puistokatu, southeast of the centre. It was built between 1858 and 1860 to designs by German architect Ernst Bernhard Lohrmann in the North German brick Gothic style. The church is dedicated to Saint Henry of Uppsala, the English-born bishop who came to Finland as a missionary in the 12th century and is venerated as the country's patron saint. For decades it was Finland's only Catholic church, serving Russian garrison soldiers and small Polish, German and Italian communities. Today it is the episcopal seat for all of Finland, the smallest Catholic diocese in Europe by area. Visitors find a bright interior with an altarpiece of Saint Henry and glazed tile floors; Latin and Finnish Masses are celebrated daily.
