Legendary monastery ruin from around 1790 on the edge of Bucharest – an eerie, unfinished church with centuries of local legend.
Chiajna Monastery on the northwestern outskirts of Bucharest is the atmospheric ruin of an 18th-century Orthodox monastery church, built around 1790 and reportedly never fully completed. The site is steeped in local legends – some say it is cursed, others that a clergyman died during construction. The roofless stone walls are now a nationally protected heritage site maintained by the adjacent Giulesti Park. At sunset the ruins cast long shadows across the greenery – an unusual, quietly haunting place right at the city limits.
